SunScreens
v2.0: Service Learning Project
07 August
- 14 August 2004 in Vienna, Austria
What
We'll Do:
(printer
friendly version)
At "Integrationshaus," a residential shelter, the Heads
On Fire delegation will help to get a computer lab up and running.
We will then present software demonstrations and leave the residents
with the capability of producing and sharing their stories with
the world.
In Traiskirchen, site of Austria's largest refugee camp, the group
will work with war orphans from Afghanistan and Iraq to help them
create multimedia pieces based on their life stories. Like the Sun
Screens exhibition itself, these Service Learning efforts will result
in the presentation of young voices that are often otherwise silenced
due to the duress that is a part of their daily realities. The refugees
living in Austria will benefit through the empowerment of documenting
their own lives and contributing to increased global awareness of
the of the harsh situations that resulted in the forced flight from
their home countries. The Heads On Fire group will benefit from
the powerful learning experience of intercultural exchange and collaboration
with people whose lives have been so profoundly affected by the
actions of our own country.
Beyond gaining the educational and globally active benefits of these
Service Learning Projects, the group will be treated to a special
cultural package that will include visits to Austria’s world
famous museums, palaces, restaurants, gardens and concert halls.
How
To Join:
The core of the delegation will be comprised of participants in
either current Heads On Fire programs or those of our organizational
partners. A limited number of spots are available to other youth
participants (ages 13 – 20) as well as adult chaperones. To
be considered for these spots, you must fill out and return the
application
form. Space is limited and applicants will be considered
on a first-come, first-served basis. All of those selected will
be obligated to pay all fees associated with their trip.
