The Monarch Project

Over the summer, Heads On Fire worked with students at Monarch High School, in downtown San Diego. Monarch's programs target the needs of San Diego's homeless and at-risk adolescent population by "providing what most children get at home -- parenting, self-esteem, conflict resolution, drug and alcohol counseling, and coping skills -- as well as career education and job-seeking skills."

During the eight week multimedia workshop with HOF, students produced digitally manipulated photo-text pieces and digital videos that were presented at an exhibition in the fall. Through collaboration with Imani: Art to Empower, the Combined Organization of Visual Artists (COVA), and the Media Arts Center of San Diego, the students were exposed to oher artistic disciplines, and had the opportunity to interact with people the same age, and also participating in summer arts programs in San Diego.

The project was futher supported by the participation of the Californina Museum of Photography and the Museum of Photographic Arts.
