This morning we had a man named Steven Shmitdkey come in and tell us about GPS devices. He gave us a device that we are going to be using next tuesday when we take our trip to mission trails. Next Tuesday we are going to Mission Trails Park to map one of the trails there because Mission Trails has not yet been put up on GPS devices and we were assigned to map the trail of the park. Mr. Schmitkey let us borrow a device and he explained how to work the device so we can navigate through the park. Mr. Schmitdkey gave us 4 steps to help us use the GPS device
Step 1: Create waypoint (put a name in for the way point)
Srep 2: In the view menu erase any other tracks on the screen. Go to view menu, select tracks and select delete tracks. Press escape key 3 times.
Step 3: Create 2nd waypoint
Step 4: Go back ot Create Menu, hit enter and go down to trail. Name Trail
Those 4 steps should help us when we are in the park next tuesay
Aside from all of us workers going to Mission Trails on Tuesday we will also have Mike Hennig going on the trail with us who just came back from a trip to Mongolia. He should be a big help to us becasue he has hiked in more extreme environments than Mission Trails.
There were additional things that Mr. Schmitdkey told us to be aware of and those were rattle snakes and Mountain Lions. When we come across a rattle snake he told us we should not taunt them and if they rattle then that is a sign to back away. He told us that if we are in a big group then the Moutain Lions most likely won't disturb us because they would be afraid, but if they do come across our path would should do something to scare them away like throw rocks or something.
